Key Components to Starting and Maintaining a Compliant Safe Patient Handling Program

This workshop will offer analysis and recommendations from a Certified Safe Patient Handling (SPH) Professional and is designed for those who have responsibilities for establishing and sustaining an SPH program. Recommended Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) SPH program elements will be explained, along with the rationale for their inclusion in an effective program. Strategies and planning for the integration of these elements into a new or existing program will be discussed based on the Nine Core Competencies established by the Association of Safe Patient Handling Professionals (ASPHP). Practical examples and tools will be presented that will be useful and necessary to achieve the desired compliance in a clinical setting. Bring your most difficult problems and questions to the workshop for answers and recommendations.
Objectives:
  • Describe the requirements and components of the OSHA emphasis program for patient handling, focusing on compliance to achieve positive outcomes.
  • Explain the purpose and role of the Nine Core Competencies of ASPHP.
  • Discuss common pitfalls associated with patient handling and how to avoid these mistakes.
